Conversations with the Salish Sea
Inlet Collective × Maplewood Flats, summer 2025
I had a piece in Conversations with the Salish Sea, a group exhibition presented by the Inlet Collective at the Nature House in Maplewood Flats.
There are few better places to show work about this coast. Maplewood Flats sits on the unceded territory of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, 311 acres of mudflat, salt marsh and upland forest on Burrard Inlet, protected as a conservation area since 1993 and stewarded by the Wild Bird Trust of BC. The mudflats fed and sustained Tsleil-Waututh families long before the inlet was industrialized, and they still anchor bird life across the region.
Visitors came for the art and stayed for the trails, arriving in the middle of the fall migration. The Coast Salish Plant Nursery opened on site partway through the run, which felt right: the show was never only about looking at the water, but about what grows alongside it and who has tended it.
